The Swirly Version
Maiya’s Roommate’s Hat

A crochet pattern by Betty McKnit

If you’ve made Maiya’s Roommate’s Hat, kick it up a notch with this swirly version. It makes a hat that’s about the size of the “beanie” from Maiya’s pattern, but it twists.
For the twisted artist in your life.

Or yourself.

Finished measurements: 8.5” long by 21” around (ladies’ medium)
Yarn: 150 yards of medium weight (4) yarn (shown in Lion Brand Landscapes)
Hook: K (6.5 mm)
Gauge: 12 sts and 5 rows over 4” in pattern

abbreviations:
ch: chain
sc: single crochet
dc: double crochet
hdc: half double crochet
blo: work through the back loop only
sl st: slip stitch
sl st dec (1) (slip stitch decrease – version 1)
pull up a loop through blo, pull up a loop through both loops of the next st, pull through all loops on the hook.Cute Maiya Swirly

sl st dec (2): (slip stitch decrease – version 2)
pull up a loop through both loops of slip stitch below, pull up a loop blo in the next stitch and through all remaining loops on hook.
rsc: reverse single crochet

About those slip stitch decreases:

This hat is primarily worked in blo, with the exception of the first and last stitches of the row. When the first and last stitches include the slip stitch decreases, the first stitch in the decrease is worked through both loops, and the second stitch of the decrease is worked through blo. I promise this will make sense when you’re working it!

About the shape of this hat:

It’s going to look pretty funky for a while there, and you might wonder how it’s all going to work out. Don’t worry, keep going! This is going to be your favorite hat.

Begin the hat!

Ch 29

Row 1: dc in fourth ch from hook, 18 dc (you should have 8 ch remaining), 3hdc, 3sc, sl st dec (1)

Turn

Row 2: Ch 1 (all stitches worked blo except for the first and last sts of each row)

Sl st dec (2), 3 sc, 3 hdc, 18 dc, 2 dc in top of turning chain (catch two loops of the chain)

Turn

Row 3: ch 3 (counts as dc), dc in both loops of the first stitch of the row below, working in blo 18 dc, 3 hdc, (first hdc falls on last dc of row below) 3 sc, sl st dec (1)

Repeat rows 2 and 3 until you have 24 rows total, or until the long side of the work measures approximately 21 inches. You can adjust the size of the hat by working a few more or fewer rows, but always end with an even-numbered row.

Turn the work, and rotate it 1/4 turn to the right. Working around the bottom edge in either sc or rsc, work two stitches into the side of each dc, and one st into each turning ch.

Holding right sides together (the right side will be the right side of the sc edge), sl st or seam the sides together, ending at the top.

Run the yarn under the slip stitches on the top of the hat (or leave open for a messy bun to poke through) and draw the hole closed.

Use the end to sew on a pom pom, or weave it in.
