98 Row Easy Fingerless Mitts

98 Row Easy Fingerless Mitts

A knitting pattern by Betty McKnit

There is one scary row to close the thumb, but the other 87* are a breeze.  Isn’t it nice to know you’ll be done with one mitt in less than 100 rows?

Cast on 36 sts.

Rows 1-4: working back and forth, knit all stitches.  (work 4 rows of garter stitch)

Place a marker on your needle, and join stitches in the round (you can seam the gap between the garter stitch edges when you weave in your ends).

Rows 15 – 24: Knit in Color A

Rows 25 – 34: Knit in Color B

Rows 35 – 74: Repeat rows 15 – 34 twice.  You should have a total of 6 stripes on your mitts.

Row 75: Change to color A, k.

Row 76: k1, m1, k until there is one stitch left in the round, m1, k1.

AbbreviationsRow 77: k.

Row 78: k 2, m1, k until there are two stitches left in the round, m1, k2.

Row 79: k.

Row 80: k 3, m1, k until there are three stitches left in the round, m1, k3.

Row 81: k.

Row 82: k 4, m1, k until there are four stitches left in the round, m1, k4.

Row 83: k.

Row 84: k 5, m1, k until there are five stitches left in the round, m1, k5.

*There are actually only 88 rows in this pattern.  I goofed when I counted and skipped from row 4 to row 15.

***Here comes the scary row***

Row 85: k 6.  Turn your work and wrap the working yarn, k 12.  Turn again, wrapping the working yarn, and k and bind off 12 thumb stitches.

Be sure to count your stitches as you bind them off, NOT as you knit them.

Turning mid row

Row 85(continued): Join Color B, k1 with new color, pass the last remaining thumb stitch over this stitch.

• K across to thumb.

• Insert the tip of the rh needle into the space below the first bound off stitch of the thumb,  and pull up a loop.

• Pass the last stitch on the rh needle over this loop.

• This is again the end of the round.

• Resume knitting in the round by bypassing the thumb stitches, and going straight over to the first knitted stitch on the lh needle.  After you do so, you will be starting on row 86.

***That wasn’t so bad, was it?***

Row 95: Purl

Row 96: Knit

Row 97:  Purl

Row 98: Knit and bind off all stitches.

Weave in all ends, remembering to seam the garter stitch beginning of the round.

Make another, this time use Color A as Color B, and Color B for Color A.
