Introduction
This little pumpkin hat is a variation of Maiya’s Roommate’s Hat, an easy, textured, double crochet hat with some simple shaping that elevate this classic beanie to just a little better than basic. It’s easy to adapt by changing yarn weights, starting chains, and row repeats. I give you three options for your little pumpkin babies.
About Maiya’s Roommate’s Hat
On one of her breaks from college, my daughter Maiya brought home her roommate’s store-bought crochet hat and asked me to copy it and make one for her. The hat was super bulky, long and slouchy, and had a really big pom pom. I copied the hat with some changes (I added shaping and trim around the lower edge) and have found it to be a really quick and versatile little pattern.

Special Stitches
sc2tog: pull up a loop in each of the next 2 sts, yo and pull through both loops on the hook.
Stitch Counts
- Stitch counts between < >
- Newborn size with (3-6 month, 6-12 month, and toddler) given in parentheses.
Begin Pattern
With Spice (orange) chain 40 (42, 44, 46).
Row 1: Working into one loop of each ch, dc in third ch from hook, dc in each ch until 7 ch remain, hdc in next 3 sts, sc in next 3 sts, sl st in last ch. <38 (40, 42, 44)>
Turn
Rows 2 and 3 are worked into the back loop only (blo), with the exception of the first and last stitches of each row, which are worked under both loops.
If you would like a hat with less texture, work into the front loop only (flo) working the first and last sts of each row under both loops.
Row 2: ch 1, sl st into sl st, working in blo, sc in next 3 sts, hdc in next 3 sts, dc in each st to last st, dc in both loops of last st. <38 (40, 42, 44)>
Turn
Row 3: ch 2 (does not count) dc in first st, working in blo, dc in each st across until 7 sts remain, hdc in next 3 sts, sc in next 3 sts, sl st in both loops of last st. <38 (40, 42, 44)>
Turn
Repeat rows 2 and 3 for 24 (26, 28, 30) rows, or until the long side of the work measures approximately 14 (17, 18, 19) inches.
You can adjust the size of the hat by working a few more or fewer rows, but always end with row 2.
Bottom Edge
Turn the work, and rotate it 1/4 turn to the right. Working around the bottom edge in either sc or rsc, work two stitches into the side of each dc, and one st into each turning ch. Adjust your stitches to alleviate curling or puckering.
Seam
Holding right sides together (the right side will be the right side of the sc or rsc edge), sl st or seam the top edge of your last row and the starting chain edge together, ending at the top of the hat, which will be the side of your work with the decreases.

Stem
Round 1: Rotate the hat and work into the sides of the rows around the top of the hat to create the stem, sc2tog around. Join Lincoln (green) by pulling it through the last stitch of the round. Fasten off Spice. <12 (13, 14, 15)>
Round 2: With Lincoln, continue in a spiral without joining, sc in each stitch around. <12 (13, 14, 15)>
Round 3: sc2tog around. <6 (7, 7, 8)>
Round 4-9: sc around. <6 (7, 7, 8)>
Round 10: sc2tog around. Fasten off. <3 (4, 4, 4)>
Thread a yarn needle with the end and pick up each stitch around and draw it tight. Pull the end into the inside of the hat and weave it in.
Weave in all other ends.
