Invisible Woman Hat

Invisible Woman Hat

A crochet pattern by Betty McKnit.

Introduction:

This pattern makes a ruched tube that can be worn as a convertible hat with an opening for hair. It can easily be customized to any length and made with any yarn. Longer tubes can be tucked into the back to be worn as a hat, or left long to protect curls or braids. It also makes a great neck warmer.

You will be measuring the circumference of the head that will wear this hat to start off. If you want a slouchier look, or want something to protect curls or braids, then add a few extra stitches.

If you do not have a head to measure, then check THIS CHART for common head circumference measurements.

US Terminology
Skill Level: Easy

Finished Size: Multiple Size Options (Shown in Ladies M and XL)

Materials:
Yarn: any (shown in Lion Brand Ferris Wheel)
Worsted Weight 270 yards (247 meters)
85 grams (3.00 ounces)
Gauge 20.0 sts = 4 inches

Yardage: One Ferris Wheel (270 yards, 247 meters) makes two 10″ hats. This is a great project for that one special ball of something, and also for leftover yarn. Heavier yarn makes great headbands and smaller hats, lighter weight yarn makes wonderful longer tubes for longer hair.
Hook: size to match your yarn in the gauge you like (loose or tight is your preference.)
I used a Furls Odyssey H hook (5 mm) with Ferris Wheel.
Tapestry needle

Abbreviations:
bl/blo – back loop/back loop only
ch – chain
dc – double crochet
flo – front loop only
fdc – foundation single crochet (I prefer a long tail fsc)
hdc – half double crochet
ldc – linked double crochet
lhdc – linked half double crochet
sc – single crochet
yo – yarn over

Special Stitches:
Linked Double Crochet (ldc): Pull up a loop in the front thread across the last dc made. Pull up a second loop in the next stitch. Yo and pull through two loops twice. ldc complete.
Linked Half Double Crochet (lhdc): Pull up a loop in the front thread across the last hdc made. Pull up a second loop in the next stitch. Yo and pull through all loops on the hook. lhdc complete.

Begin

Row 1: create a row of fsc to match the length of the circumference of your head. Add 2-4 stitches of ease for a snug fit, and more if you want your hat bigger or looser to cover curls or braids. Taking care not to twist, join with sl st to first fsc.

Round 2: ch 3, pull up a loop in the second ch from the hook, pull up a second loop under both loops of the next st, (yo and pull through 2 loops) twice. ldc in each st around.

The remainder of the hat is worked in a spiral without joining or chaining up. The next round creates a rolled tube edge.

Round 3: This round is worked catching bl of each st and bottom loop of foundation sc. 11 sc, hdc, dc to last st, hdc.

Round 4: working through both loops, 11 sc, hdc, dc to last st, hdc.

Repeat round 4 to desired length

Suggested lengths: Stop at any length if you want a headband.
8-10” = beanie hat with space for bun/ponytail
14” = head scarf, tuck it in in the back or not, or wear it on the neck.

Round 5: Working into flo, 11 sc, hdc, ldc to last st, hdc

Round 6: catching bl of each stitch with the bl of the stitch in the row below, 11 sl st, sc to last st, sl st.
