INVISIBLE PEOPLE HAT
A crochet pattern by Betty McKnit
Here is a quick pattern to make up in isolation, or anytime. And I just want you to know, that you’re not invisible, even if it might feel like you are.
Remember:
YOU MATTER.
A crochet pattern by Betty McKnit
This pattern is an offshoot of the Invisible Woman Hat and makes a slouchy beanie without the extra bulk in back.
The Invisible People Hat was designed to use one skein of Whims Merino Crochet Yarn – Superwash Merino and Nylon Worsted Weight Yarn. You may use any worsted weight yarn you like.
**If you upsize you will need more yarn.**
Finished Measurements:
Size: Adult Small – 22” circumference, 8” long
Size: Adult Medium – 24” circumverence, 9” long (instructions in parenthesis)
You can easily resize by adjusting the length of your starting chain to your head measurement plus 2-4 sts for ease. You can do fewer or more rounds before the decrease rounds to change the length.
Materials:
Yarn: Worsted Whims Merino or any worsted weight yarn.
Yardage: 100g (3.5oz), 94yds (86m)
Hook: J (6 mm)
Abbreviations and stitches used:
bl, blo – back loop (only)
dc – double crochet
dec dc2tog – double crochet two together decrease (work over 2 stitches)
dec sc2tog – single crochet two together decrease (work over 2 stitches)
fl, flo – front loop (only)
ldc – linked double crochet – (Link to video tutorial for this stitch)
lhdc – linked half double crochet – (Link to video tutorial for this stitch)
st(s) – stitch (es)
yrh – yarn round hook
Ch 70 (75)
Row 1: Starting with the second ch from your hook, sc across.
Join in round: taking care not to twist, sc in the starting ch below the first sc. This is going to create a spiral join that you’re going to finish closing up when you weave in your starting end. I promise, it’s going to look great.
Round 2: ch 1, pull up a loop in the fl of the sc you just made, pull up another loop into the top of the next sc, yrh, pull through both loops, ldc across to last st, lhdc.
Reminder: this is a spiral! We aren’t going to chain up at the beginning of the rows.
Also, the next round creates a rolled tube edge. I know this is different than what you are used to, hang in there.
Round 3: catching bl of each st and working behind your work to also work into the bottom chain, 11 sc, hdc, sc, to last st, hdc.
Rounds 4-11: 11 sc, hdc, dc (blo) to last st, hdc.
Rounds 12-15: 11 sc, hdc, *working into blo, dc2tog, dc repeat from * around, hdc.
Round 16: 1sc, dc2tog (blo) around.
Round 17: sc2tog across all sts and continue until you have 4 sts left. Break the yarn and run it under the top of each sc, pull closed.
Fasten off.
Weave in ends, closing the small gap at the start of your project with your starting end.

This hat was designed in the time of COVID-19.
I’m socially distancing in isolation and only have myself to model and photograph for this pattern.
I want you to know you’re not invisible. You matter.
If you are struggling, please reach out to a friend, relative, loved one, or a crochet group online. My group is Betty’s Besties and you are welcome to join us. You’re not alone. Stay connected. We’re all in this together. We will get through this.
Oh and don’t cut your own hair. Make and wear this hat instead.
