Turn
Repeat rows 4 and 5, adding texture rows as you like starting from row 6. Continue until your working side is about 58” wide. The increase edge of the shawl may curve a little giving your working edge a slight curve as well.
TEXTURE ROWS
You can add as many or as few texture rows as you like to your scarf/shawl, starting after row 5. I do dc rows until I get bored then I throw in some texture. You can plan the texture rows and do them in a pattern. You can also do the entire shawl in dc if you want to.
For texture rows, always keep the first and last sts of in pattern and replace the dc stitches with texture stitches. Sometimes you may end up one or two stitches off on the ends, between your texture stitches and your inc/dec. In that case fill in extra stitches at the beginning and the end of the rows with dc. Small variations like this are not noticeable.
You can use any textured stitch you like. Here are some that I used on this shawl. Unless otherwise indicated, these patterns begin and end
- 2dc Cable (criss-cross):
*sk next st, dc, dc in skipped stitch. Repeat from *
2) Easy Filet
Row 1: *dc ch1 sk1, repeat from * to end
Row 2: work dc’s into the dc’s and ch sps
3) V Stitch
Row 1: *sk 2, dc, ch 1, dc in next sp, sk 2. Repeat from *
Row 2: * dc, ch 1, dc in ch 1 sp. Repeat from *
4) FP/BP ridges
Row 1: FPDC
Row 2: BPDC
Row 3: FPDC
When you repeat this texture pattern, begin on the opposite side so that you have ridges on both sides of your shawl.
5) Alternating FP/BP Double Crochet
Row 1: *FPDC, BPDC, repeat from *
Row 2: Repeat Row 1, working FPDC into the BPDC from the previous row (they will be in the front of the work on this row) and vice versa.
6) Triple Dips
Row 1: *dc ch1 sk1, repeat from * to end
Row 2: (you will have to replace the beginning and ending dc inc and dec stitches with sc inc and dec for this row.) sc, working in front of the ch sp, tr in the row below, sc in next dc, working in back of the ch sp, tr in dc the row below. Repeat from *. End with sc increase or decrease.
7) Post Dips
Row 1: *dc ch1 sk1, repeat from * to end
Row 2: *dc in ch sp, fpdc around next dc, dc in ch sp, bpdc around next dc. Repeat from *
8) Fans and V’s
I finished my shawl with these four rows, which gives it a striking flare. It requires a little fiddling at the beginning and end of the row, add V stitches in the V stitches if needed
Row 1: *sk 3, 5dc in next st, sk 3, Vst, repeat from *
Row 2: *Vst in center dc of fan, Vst in next Vst
Row 3: Repeat row 2
Row 4: *Vst in center dc of fan, sk 1, 2 dc, dc in ch sp, 2 dc, sk 1, repeat from *
If this is the last row of your shawl, finish with a row of sc.
EDGING
Rotate the work clockwise to crochet along the long edge, sc by working into the sides of the edc and the turning chains along the side of the work. Work under two threads of the edc or chain and leave one stitch unworked, spacing the stitches evenly. I don’t necessarily make the same number of scs in each stitch.
Working along the short edges, work 5 sc, picot around.
Fasten off. Weave in all ends.
