How Many Anniversary Cakes does it take?
I’ve been doing some experimenting to figure out how many cakes it takes. I started with the original 6-Day Star, and I also made the 6-Day Ridgy Didge Star Blanket and the 6-Day Superstar Blanket (The 6-Day Supernova is next!). Here are my results.
One Caron Anniversary Cake has approximately 1072 yards of bulky weight yarn, and it will make a 6-Day Star Blanket that is about 60″ across. I would call that blanket a throw size. It is the perfect size for a child, for a lap blanket, as decoration on a chair or sofa, perfect to grab while watching tv or living room naps, or to keep in your office to throw over your shoulders on chilly days.
It takes 4 Slices of Anniversary Cakes to match the yardage of one full cake, so you can also make a 60″ 6-Day Star Blanket with 4 Slices of Anniversary Cakes.
For a larger blanket approximately 72″ across, a perfect stopping point seems to be about 1&1/2 Anniversary Cakes, or 1 Anniversary Cake and 2 Slice of Anniversary Cakes. That’s about 1700 yards of yarn.
Tip: When measuring your blanket, measure from the center to one point, and double it. That will provide a more accurate measurement due to the asymmetry of the 7 points.

What to buy
3 Anniversary Cakes, and make two blankets (mix colorways for really interesting blankets!)
or
1 Anniversary Cake, and two Slice of Anniversary Cakes (great options for incorporating solid rounds into the variagated yarns.
or
6 Slice of Anniversary Cakes
Hook
The hook combination that has worked for me has been to start with an 8 mm hook and change to a 10 mm hook after Setup Round 5 or 6.
Follow my instructions in the 6-Day Star Blanket patterns for checking your tension at the end of every round and adjusting your hook size accordingly. You must correct any tension issues in the setup rounds. Once your setup rounds are complete, you don’t need to worry about curling and do not need to continue to increase your hook size.
Color Placement
When using one 1 Caron Anniversary Cake and 2 Slices of Anniversary Cake, a great way to balance the yardage and colors is to choose 2 of the 6 repeating rounds of the blanket to use the Slices on. To balance the yardage evenly, one of those two rounds (but not both) should be a single crochet round.
If you’re using Slice of Anniversary Cakes, and want to use equal amounts of them, you would use one for 3 of the 6 repeat rounds, and 3 for the other repeat rounds. My favorite way to change colors every three rounds is to change between rounds 2 and 3 and again between rounds 5 and 6.
If you’ve chosen a solid color for your slices, it’s a good idea to use it for the first two setup rounds. The center of the star looks best when there are no mid-round color changes. If you have chosen variegated cakes, you can cut out some sections of one color to use for the first two rounds.

How I made the 6-Day Ridgy Didge Star Blanket with Book Club & Golden Slice
The 6-Day Ridgy Didge adaptation is a way to add a row of texture to your 6-Day Crochet. It involves substituting front- or back-post stitches for the second round of double crochet (Setup Round 8 and Repeat Round 6). Whether you use front post or back post depends on if you want to flip your star blanket (use front post), or only work from one side (use back post). For more information about that, check the 6-Day Ridgy Didge Star Blanket pattern.

How I made the 6-Day Superstar Blanket with Lemon Chiffon, Crocus, and Golden
The 6-Day Superstar Blanket is the 14-point version of the 6-Day Star blanket. Turns out one Anniversary Cake and two Slices of Anniversary Cake make a great 6-Day Superstar.
For this variation I chose the second dc round and the following sc round (Setup Rounds 8 & 9 and Repeat Rounds 6 & 7) for the slices. I alternated stripes of Crocus and Golden.
Pattern: 6-Day Superstar Blanket
Finished Size: 70″ across
Yarn
Color A 1 Anniversary Cake in Lemon Chiffon
Color B 1 Slice of Anniversary Cake in Crocus
Color C 1 Slice of Anniversary Cake in Golden
Hooks
8 mm and 10 mm
Begin with Color C and 8 mm hook. Work Setup Rounds 1 & 2.
Change to Color A and work Setup Rounds 3 & 4. Change to 10 mm hook and work Setup Rounds 5, 6 & 7.
Change to Color B and work Setup Rounds 8 & 9.
Change to Color A and work Setup Rounds 10 & 11 and Repeat Rounds 4 & 5.
Change to Color C and work Rounds 6 and 7.
Change to Color A and work Rounds 2-5
Change to Color B and work Rounds 6 and 7.
From here on you will always work rounds 2-5 in Color A (the Anniversary Cake) and Rounds 6 and 7 in the one of the other colors. Alternate between Color B and Color C.
Total Repeats: 4
Edge: Half Double Crochet. Make 3 hdc in the points and sk 1 in the valleys to maintain the shape of the star.
(I tried to do a second round of hdc in the third loop but I ran out of yarn. Get an extra cake if you want to do that.)
Tip: I have lots of interesting borders on my patterns that are interchangeable. I hope you’ll try them out on your projects! I have a roundup of some of the best options for your 6-Day Star Blankets on my blog.
